Where to start? His character is very intriguing. I would love it very much if JK Rowling were to release a book about his life. Not like Bathilda Bagshot’s book but just a story of him at Hogwarts, even if the book was to only follow his life for a year. I feel like he is a character that we aren’t given enough insight on which leads to this grey area. Who was Albus Dumbledore?

First of all there is no doubting that he is one bad ass powerful wizard. Even his brother shows incredible magic in Deathly Hallows so it may be a Dumbledore thing.

Secondly, it’s never 100% clarified exactly which house Dumbledore was in during his student years (if memory serves me right). I think subconsciously we as readers automatically assume he is a Griffindor however he could do perfectly well in other houses for example Ravenclaw because he is an intellect.

Thirdly, I feel like he is a man who knew too much, which is not a gift but rather a sickness. He knew Harry had to die, he knew he himself was going to die. I could not imagine having to deal with that. Those deaths were unpreventable, meaning he knew they were going to happen but could do nothing to stop it. During book six as Harry learns more and more about Albus’ past we start to see a more darker side to him. This would suggest a slightly Slytherin quality.

After receiving my early access to Pottermore one of the first wand woods I read about (after mine; Aspen) was ‘Elder’. I am not going to take any text from the website as I am aware many people have yet to recieve their e-mails (fingers crossed). So I will only be referring to the bits I found very interesting in continuing to shape my opinion of him. As we know the Elder wand is not the most loyal. Olivander states that a remarkable wizard is only able to keep the Elder wand, i.e. extremely powerful. Power is associated with dark arts, evil and wicked things. This is because we use terms such as ‘power hungry’ meaning people will use any means necessary to obtain power. He who must not be named is a perfect example as we know his motives behind obtaining the Elder wand; more power. Now let me explain why this information shapes and re-shapes my opinion of him. On the one hand it can be argued that he has the Elder wand for power while on the other you can suggest that he is keeping it in order to keep it away from those who will choose to use it for evil. My personal opinion of this is that a younger Albus would want the wand for power while in later life as dark times are approaching he makes it his mission to make sure it does not fall into the wrong hands. 

In the end I’m glad he was on Harry’s side because he is one wizard who you would want at your back. Reliable, trust worthy, a BAMF although slightly mad but all geniuses are slightly mad.
